Insurance: Make sure your contractor is fully insured with workman's compensation and liability insurance. If he doesn't have insurance and gets injured on your property, you could be liable. Ask who the insurance carrier is and get a copy of the certificate of insurance prior to beginning work. 8. Place of business: Make sure you know where your contractor's office is located. If the contractor gives you a post office box or gives you a mobile telephone number only, that could be trouble. 9. Scheduling: Make sure that your contractor is able to work when it is convenient for you as well as your neighbors if the work is conducive to disturbing them. 10. Color test: If you are planning a paint project, your prospective contractor can provide color tests for you. This should be included in the proposal. 11. Products: Remember that labor is 80% to 90% of the cost of painting. Always use the best paint products available.
